You know, there's something about Disney that we can all relate to. Something so deep within us, we sometimes don't realise it exists. Especially for adults, they usually just shun anything to do with Disney, thinking that it's all kids stuff.
But it's the kids who know better. It's the kids who realise that special something deep down within us. Because their carefree minds are a lot less influenced from the troubles of society, they easily connect to their deepest selves - the core of their being.
And that is what we should all do: Connect to our core. Our true selves.
Just last Christmas I happened to watch Disney's "Pocahontas" on television. And when it came to the part where "Colours Of The Wind" played, it struck some nerve in me. As I listened to the lyrics and absorbed its grand melody, I had chills and I started to tear. Seriously. I couldn't remember the last time anything affected me so deeply. This is one powerful song which speaks volumes. Whoever wrote the words to this song has truly connected to their deepest selves...
I just had to dedicate a post to "Colours Of The Wind". Just reading the lyrics can stir something deep within you. I've highlighted the parts where I felt so moved by the words...
Colours Of The Wind
You think you own whatever land you land on
The earth is just a dead thing you can claim
But I know every rock and tree and creature
Has a life, has a spirit, has a name
You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like you
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You'll learn things you never knew, you never knew
Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon?
Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned?
Can you sing with all the voices of the mountain?
Can you paint with all the colours of the wind?
Can you paint with all the colours of the wind?
Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest
Come taste the sunsweet berries of the earth
Come roll in all the riches all around you
And for once, never wonder what they're worth
The rainstorm and the river are my brothers
The heron and the otter are my friends
And we are all connected to each other
In a circle, in a hoop that never ends
How high does a sycamore grow?
If you cut it down, then you'll never know
And you'll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon
For whether we are white, or copper-skinned
We need to sing with all the voices of the mountain
Need to paint with all the colours of the wind
You can own the earth and still
All you own is earth until
You can paint with all the colours of the wind
I've always respected and have been awed by the teachings of native cultures. Most people think that in today's modern society, the native teachings of old don't apply.
But it's the natives who know better.
It's the natives who know better...
